  • Do you develop all your recipes?

Yes, all of the recipes on this site are developed in our home kitchen, unless stated otherwise. We put a lot of work into recipe research and testing to ensure the highest quality and most delicious results for our readers.

We provide references where appropriate to give credit to sources that have inspired or influenced our recipes or provided historical context about a dish. If a recipe is adapted from someone else’s, we will always provide proper attribution.

In Filipino culture, culinary knowledge is commonly transmitted orally instead of through written records. There might not always be a specific source to refer to. As food bloggers, we see our role as learning, sharing, and preserving the rich history and cultural significance of Filipino cuisine. We strive to make our blog a trusted resource for modern and traditional Filipino recipes and culinary knowledge.

  • How did you learn to cook?

Noelle started helping out in the kitchen at a young age, while Elijah learned to cook his own meals during college.

Both of us have acquired basic Filipino cooking skills through our families; they taught us how to make dishes by taste without any written recipes.

Our culinary knowledge has grown from personal cooking experience, reading, engaging in foodie communities, exploring different cuisines in restaurants, and trying out new skills and techniques in our own kitchen. It is constantly expanding!

Asian American Cuisine

  • What is Asian American food?

Asian American food reflects the rich tapestry of Asian cultures and the unique experiences of Asian Americans in the United States.

It is a diverse and dynamic culinary landscape that encompasses a vast array of flavors, ingredients, cooking techniques, and cultural influences.

From our families who immigrated to the United States, to the children born and raised here, we all eat food that is rooted in our Asian heritage but has also been influenced by the American environment and our own personal experiences. This cuisine was born from our history as Asian Americans and continues to evolve as our community grows and adapts.

Through our blog, we strive to showcase the wide variety of Asian American cuisine, including traditional dishes and innovative fusion creations like Ube Horchata, Milk Bread Cinnamon Rolls, and Dragon Sushi Bake!

  • Are Filipino Americans considered Asian American?

Yes, Filipino Americans are considered Asian American. According to the 2020 US Census, there are over 24 million Asian Americans, with Filipinos as one of the largest ethnic groups.

This designation recognizes the Filipino American community’s shared heritage and experiences as part of the broader Asian American identity.

With that said, we are aware of the challenges that Filipino Americans face in navigating their identity within the Asian American community, such as data disaggregation, cultural stereotypes, and perceptions of authenticity.

Through our food blog, we aim to create a space that celebrates the diverse experiences and culinary traditions of Filipino Americans and other Asian Americans.

  • Why focus on Asian-American cuisine?

Our response reflects our personal identities. As Asian immigrants’ children, we’ve had to continually navigate the challenge of being seen as fully Asian and fully American.

We were raised in environments where Asian cuisine was exoticized and misunderstood, our closest friends were diverse groups of fellow Asian Americans, and strangers often asked us “So where are you from?”

Our sense of “otherness” is also noticeable within the Filipino community where individuals can face judgment for not speaking fluent Tagalog or having different skin tones.

In discussions about modern Asian American food, there’s a tendency to make critical comments about dishes not being “real” or “authentic” enough. This kind of perception further undermines and devalues Asian American culture.

This food blog believes that being Asian-American is more than enough. In the grand scope of world history, Asian-American culture is relatively young. It continues to grow, change, and evolve, and it’s valuable to embrace our role in this ongoing transformation.

The emergence of Asian-American cuisine represents a recent development in the culinary world—something we consider significant and worthy of recognition. By keeping an open mind, we can uncover new opportunities for culinary innovation within this realm.

As food bloggers, we embrace this growth mindset at the place that holds great meaning for us – our dinner table. By cooking Asian-American food with pride and without judging our dishes as “authentic,” “traditional,” or “real,” and instead allowing ourselves to find joy, inspiration, and deliciousness, we move closer to celebrating Asian American culture as a unique and wonderful entity.

This blog is here for all the Asian-Americans who have ever felt like they don’t quite fit into any one category, for those who have experienced the joy and frustration of straddling multiple cultures, and for those who want to explore and embrace the diverse flavors and stories of Asian-American cuisine. We see you.
