A Boozy Twist on Boba Milk Tea

A White Russian is a strong cocktail made from vodka, Kahlua (coffee liqueur), and a splash of heavy cream. It’s a classic cocktail that’s well known by bartenders and the Big Lebowski viewers.

Some people also like to enjoy White Russians with milk instead of cream, which makes the texture a bit less rich but more drinkable.

As some of you may know, we love imbibing at home. We have our own cocktail station, where we make lots of classic cocktails as well experiment with our own.

In addition, Noelle frequently makes milk tea drinks at home. We knew that someday these two types of drinks would eventually cross paths in our home bar!

This recipe’s first iteration was a happy accident. A few weeks ago, we were trying to make classic White Russians at home. However, we found out that we didn’t have any milk or cream in the fridge, but we did have a bottle of milk tea.

We used the milk tea in our makeshift White Russian, and now it’s become a favorite in our home bar.

Our final recipe includes vodka, Kahlua, milk tea, boba, and honey. It has that distinct Kahlua flavor that you may be familiar with in White Russians, and the milk tea adds a great floral, “leafy” element and a milky (but not overly rich) texture.

What Type of Milk Tea Should I Use?

We have tested this recipe using homemade milk tea. We tested at different tea strengths, and also experimented with heavy cream and milk.

The main issue we ran into was that the tea flavor would always get overpowered by either the dairy or the kahlua.

Store bought milk tea seems to work best, as we found that the tea and milk flavors balance well with the kahlua.

We took a photo of some examples of milk teas you can use, but really just look for any regular black milk tea you can get your hands on.

They usually have a blend of milk, black tea, salt, and sugar.

Try to avoid bottles with lots of other flavors in it (such as brown sugar boba, rose milk tea, etc.) as these extra flavors may drastically change the overall sweetness and flavor profile of the cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz Kahlua
  • ½ cup milk tea, store bought works best
  • cooked boba, cooked per manufacturer’s instruction
  • honey, to taste
  • ice

Recipe

  1. Mix cooked boba with squeeze of honey, to taste.
  2. In a double old fashioned (16 oz) cup, add your preferred amount of boba.
  3. Fill the cup with ice.
  4. Add vodka, kahlua, and milk tea.
  5. Give it a few stirs and serve with a boba straw.

Tips on White Russian Boozy Boba

  • For best results, refrigerate the alcohol and milk tea before starting this recipe.
  • White Russians are typically strong drinks. For a softer cocktail experience, decrease (proportionally) the amount of vodka and Kahlua.
  • Use bottled milk teas that contain black tea.
