Whether you have a busy morning or you’re looking for an ice cold pick-me-up, avocado smoothies are a refreshing drink to enjoy.

Blend this in less than 5 minutes to get your day started!

Avocado Smoothie is an incredibly creamy smoothie made with ripe avocados, bananas, yogurt, and honey. It can be served as an on-the-go breakfast or inside a filling smoothie bowl.

Avocados are a naturally creamy ingredient that tastes great in so many dishes. But this recipe makes avocados the star of the show!

Customizing your Avocado Smoothie

You can customize this recipe so that it’s just the way you like it. The recipe tastes great as is, but we encourage you to add your own special ingredient to make it yours!

Here are some suggested add-ins for the smoothie:

  • matcha shot
  • espresso shot
  • vanilla protein powder
  • chocolate sauce (drizzle it along the inside of the cup)

Use this Recipe to Make an Avocado Smoothie Bowl

Another way we love to use an avocado smoothie is to make a smoothie bowl – they’re beautiful and a lot more filling if you want a bigger breakfast.

Simply pour your smoothie into a bowl instead of a cup and add your toppings!

For a smoothie bowl version, we also like to add a bit more ice to make the consistency thicker and more spoon-able.

Some smoothie bowl toppings to try:

  • frozen blueberries
  • banana chips
  • nuts and seeds (check out this Goodmix Foods paleo mix on Amazon)
  • dried goji berries
  • coconut flakes
  • granola ( I love the gluten free granola from Trader Joes! It’s a mix of corn puffs, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit.)

Smoothie Blending Tips

We get that not everybody has a top-notch blender. We’ve bought (and broke) a few lower-priced blenders ourselves, and we’ve learned that these gadgets can be fragile and finicky. We’ve even had one literally start smoking because we tried to blend a little too aggressively!

Nowadays we use a personal sized Ninja Blender, which has been super reliable and perfect for making 1-2 portions at a time.

Luckily, through our own mistakes we’ve figured out some tricks on how to get the best smoothie and extend the life of your blender at any price range or quality.

These tips will help you get the smoothest blend with minimal wear and tear on your blender:

  • Load the blender in this order: liquids, yogurt, fruit, then ice. This will reduce your chances of getting a smoothie littered with those big chunks of ice or fruit that your average blender seems to miss.
  • Pulse on high (2-3 seconds at a time) until the top layer (ice) has made its way down to the bottom near the blades. Then set the blender on low and slowly increase the speed.

Equipment Needed

Ingredients

  • ½ cup milk of your choice
  • 1 tsp wildflower honey
  • ½ cup fat free vanilla yogurt
  • 1 large avocado sliced
  • 1 banana sliced
  • 1 cup ice, add more for a thicker smoothie

Suggested add-ins

  • 1 shot espresso
  • vanilla protein powder
  • chocolate sauce drizzled along the sides of the cup

Recipe

  1. Fill the blender in order of the ingredients listed. See Note 1.
  2. Pulse until all the layers have mixed with each other. Then set the blender on low and slowly increase the speed until the “whirlpool” is fully present. Once there, continue blending the whirlpool for at 10-20 seconds.
  3. Divide the smoothie into 2 cups.

Note 1. When making smoothies, your smoothie will blend faster and more evenly when you to add liquids first, then yogurts, fruits, and finally ice.
