Furikake Chex Mix is a Japanese-Hawaiian inspired version of the classic American Chex Mix.
Chex Mix has been hugely popular in America since its debut in the 1950’s because of it’s easy-to-make, customizable, and highly snackable nature.
To take it even further, Hawaiian residents developed their own spin on Chex Mix by incorporating furikake, a savory Japanese seasoning mainly composed of seaweed and salt.
While trying to research more on the history of this snack, I couldn’t pinpoint an exact time or date of creation but it seems that Furikake Chex Mix has been popular in Hawaii since at least the 80’s.
The biggest difference between classic Chex Mix and Furikake Chex Mix is definitely the seasoning. The original Chex Party Mix recipe includes worsteschire sauce and garlic, where Furikake Chex Mix uses furikake and soy sauce.
With its gaining popularity, there are countless recipes of Furikake Chex Mix and it’s clear that this snack is here to stay!
Our inspiration for the Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix came from multiple occasions this spring when we enjoyed it with friends.
Whether hiking, camping, picnicking, having a movie night, or hosting a potluck party, we found ourselves munching on various versions of furikake chex mix that our friends and we made.
It’s safe to say that this year has been filled with a lot of furikake chex mix munching!
While restocking on my favorite chips at the Japanese market, I reached for the Jagarico Hokkaido Butter Chips and had an idea. I wondered if they would taste good in furikake Chex mix.
The experimenting began and I developed a “honey butter” themed furikake Chex mix – and it turned out absolutely delicious!

Additional Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix ingredients to consider:
If you want to change up the recipe by adding an extra ingredient, there are three easy ways to do it.
You can swap out 1 or 2 cups of any filling listed in the original recipe. Another option is to include the new ingredient and adjust the amount of glaze accordingly.
Alternatively, you can mix in the extra ingredient after preparing the dish, which works well for already seasoned and roasted foods.
Below of some of our tips we learned through experience to make the perfect Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix:
Honey Butter Furikake Chex mix can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 week. It’s best kept in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cabinet.
We like to store our furikake chex mix in an air-locking cereal box, which helps keep it fresh for longer!
