Welcome to our miso caramel hojicha latte recipe!

This year we’ve been exploring cafe drinks to make at home. We love to make ourselves drinks as part of our self care, and to help motivate us as we work from home.

It’s nice to take a break from working and have a relaxing drink to sip on while checking emails or writing blog posts! Not to mention it saves us a bit of money too.

Miso caramel hojicha latte is a smoky, nutty, and sweet tea latte. It is made in a matter of minutes using cold brewed hojicha, homemade miso caramel sauce, and creamy milk.

This miso caramel hojicha latte is very easy to make, doesn’t require much prep time, and is a creamy, delicious treat that tastes super indulgent but is actually really healthy compared to a lot of the coffee shop drinks out there.

Today we’ll teach you how to make this refreshing coffee treat at home, using our Quick and Easy Miso Caramel Sauce recipe.

What is Hojicha?

Hojicha is a type of Japanese green tea. It’s made of green tea that is collected during the last harvest of the season (before hojicha was invented, these leaves may have been considered unsellable.)

Through a high-temperature roasting process, the leaves turn to a warm brown, needle-like shape. When steeped as tea, hojicha provides a rich, toasty flavour and a deep amber colour.

Hojicha is low in caffeine and is available in both powdered form and loose leaf form. It is often used to flavour other drinks and foods, and is especially popular as a latte flavouring in Japan.

In our recipe, we used loose leaf hojicha that we purchased from Marukai Market in Los Angeles. You can also find it online on Amazon here.

What does a miso caramel hojicha latte taste like?

A miso caramel hojicha latte is sweet and buttery, with a smoky undertone and a nutty finish. It has a complex, satisfying flavour that we found really satisfying to drink!

The warm notes of roasted hojicha pairs perfectly with the buttery sweetness of the caramel and the umami savouryness of the miso. The milk brings it all together to make the drink extra creamy and comforting.

We’ve also included a recipe for our  Quick and Easy Miso Caramel Sauce, which you can add to your hojicha latte to give it more umami richness.

Of course, if you decide not to make your own caramel sauce, you can use storebought.

Why you should make a miso caramel hojicha latte at home!

It’s easy to make – With just a few minutes of prep time, you can make this delicious latte, and maybe another one to share with a friend while you’re at it!

It saves money – For just a fraction of the price of a latte from a coffee shop, you can make one yourself at home and enjoy it whenever you want!

You deserve it – Show yourself some love with a relaxing and delicious homemade latte!

Homemade tastes better – When you’re making it yourself, you can customize your drink exactly how you like it and choose the best ingredients to suit your taste! Skip on the artificial flavoring and extra sugar, and use the best ingredients for a truly luxurious-tasting drink.

Also, incorporating the miso caramel sauce into your latte adds a depth of flavour that you can’t get from a store-bought version.

We used the Our Place Night + Day Carafe to make this recipe

We cold brewed our hojicha using the new Our Place Night + Day Carafe!

It’s an all-in-one carafe, infuser, and aerator! It comes with a steel infuser that’s perfect for cold brews or infused spirits, an aerator for when it’s time to break open that bottle of wine you’ve been saving, and a 360 deg pour lid.

This carafe exemplifies the superior multifunction and aesthetic designs that we all know and love from Our Place!

We have been using their ecosystem of products in our own kitchen, and we’re excited to now be able to share them with you through our blog posts. Click our affiliate link to start shopping!

Thank you to Our Place for gifting us this carafe, and thank YOU for supporting our blog!

How to store and keep your homemade latte

We recommend storing the leftover tea and caramel in separate containers in the fridge.

You can keep the tea refrigerated for up to four days (tea leaves removed) and the caramel for up to one month (in an airtight container).

Assemble the ingredients when you are ready to drink your latte.

Ingredients

Cold Brewed Hojicha

  • 6 tsp loose leaf hojicha
  • 1 qt water

Miso Caramel Hojicha Latte

  • 1 tbsp miso caramel sauce to taste

  • ice
