Introduction to Sea Salt Cream Green Tea
Sea Salt Cream Green Tea is a popular beverage found at many boba shops, Asian bakeries, and restaurants like 85 Degrees, 7 Leaves, or Din Tai Fung.
Boba shops often offer some form of “Sea Salt Cream collection” on the menu, allowing customers to choose from different base teas topped with the same refreshing sea salt foam. This ensures that everyone can find a flavor they enjoy.
As a personal favorite of mine since college, I’ve enjoyed this drink from many different shops as a reward for my study sessions. My first time having it was the Sea Salt Mountain Green Tea from 85 Degrees!
While I am still a very loyal customer for my usual Sea Salt Cream Green Tea with a marble taro bun and pork floss bun, I also choose to make the drink at home whenever that craving hits.
The last time I made this drink, I had a little extra and offered it to Elijah (who usually prefers savory over anything sweet) and he drank every last drop!
What does Sea Salt Cream Green Tea taste like?
Sea Salt Cream Green Tea has a unique and delicious flavor! The green tea is refreshing and cold, and the sea salt cream on top adds a nice creamy, salty, and sweet taste.
The layered presentation allows for a unique flavor experience, where your first sips will taste the lightness of the green tea, but then the sea salt cream comes through with its distinct creaminess and saltiness.
Once mixed together, the the following sips are nice and milky with a salty finish that pleasantly lingers.
This beverage is easily likable and undeniably delicious!
Helpful Tips for Making Sea Salt Cream Green Tea at Home
If you’re new to making iced tea drinks at home, don’t sweat it! We’ve got some helpful tips to ensure you get a tasty Sea Salt Cream Green Tea every time:
- Brew your tea to double strength – A strong tea will uphold its flavor and remain balanced against the ice and sea salt cream. Brew the tea according to your product instructions, but multiply the amount of tea leaves by two.
- Selecting a green tea – We used sencha tea but for a more floral flavor profile try jasmine green tea (made from jasmine leaf). Consider using other green teas such as genmaicha, matcha, hojicha, or gyokuro which all have differences in sweetness and earthiness. There are many green tea varieties around the world, so experiment to find your favorite!
- Add sweetener – Dissolve white sugar, honey, monk fruit sweetener, or agave to your hot brewed tea. Our recipe uses a minimal amount of sugar, but if you want it to taste more like boba shops consider increasing the sweetness level.
- Use high quality sea salt – When used as a finisher or garnish, a quality sea salt can make or break the end result. We used OSMO Salt’s Flakey White Sea Salt which performed incredibly well in this recipe!

How to Make Ahead and Store Sea Salt Cream Green Tea
Preparing Sea Salt Cream Green Tea in advance is easy. You can make the components separately and assemble them when ready to serve.
Brew the tea and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days, although it’s best to drink it within 24 hours for best freshness and flavor.
As for the sea salt cream, you can prepare it the night before and keep it chilled in a sealed container. When it’s time to serve, assemble the drink with ice.
What to Serve with Sea Salt Cream Green Tea
Sea Salt Cream Green Tea is amazing on its own, but it’s even better as an accompaniment to a delicious meal!
Try Sea Salt Cream Green Tea with these mouthwatering foods:
- hot pot or soups like Braised Beef Noodle Soup
- fried chicken, popcorn chicken, or Taiwanese Style Popcorn Chicken Sandwich
- bread and pastries like Ube Cream Puffs
- steamed or fried dumplings like Pork & Shrimp Siomai
- snacks and appetizers like Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp sencha tea
- 1 cup hot water
- ¼ cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 tsp white sugar
- ice
- sea salt garnish, to taste
- sweetener to taste (optional)
- matcha powder garnish
Recipe
- Brew 1 tbsp sencha : 1 cup hot water for 5 minutes. Alternatively, brew tea according to product instructions but double the amount of tea leaves. Remove the tea leaves and mix in the optional sweetener.
- Remove the tea leaves and mix in the optional sweetener. Set aside to cool slightly, or chill in the fridge for a colder drink.
- Whip the heavy whipping cream and sugar together to soft peaks using a milk frother or electric mixer with whisk attachment. See Note 1.
Note 1. If desired, you can mix the sea salt directly in the whipped cream instead of garnishing. We garnish with sea salt in this recipe because Elijah and I have different preferences for saltiness, and therefore can make final adjustments for the individual’s taste.
- In your serving cup, fill with ice and green tea, leaving at least 1 inch of room at the top. Top it off with the whipped cream.
- Garnish with sea salt to taste and powdered matcha.
