What is Furikake Chex Mix?
Furikake Chex Mix is a Japanese-Hawaiian inspired version of the classic American Chex Mix.
Chex Mix has been hugely popular in America since its debut in the 1950’s because of it’s easy-to-make, customizable, and highly snackable nature.
To take it even further, Hawaiian residents developed their own spin on Chex Mix by incorporating furikake, a savory Japanese seasoning mainly composed of seaweed and salt.
While trying to research more on the history of this snack, I couldn’t pinpoint an exact time or date of creation but it seems that Furikake Chex Mix has been popular in Hawaii since at least the 80’s.
The biggest difference between classic Chex Mix and Furikake Chex Mix is definitely the seasoning. The original Chex Party Mix recipe includes worsteschire sauce and garlic, where Furikake Chex Mix uses furikake and soy sauce.
With its gaining popularity, there are countless recipes of Furikake Chex Mix and it’s clear that this snack is here to stay!
Our Inspiration for this Recipe
Our inspiration for the Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix came from multiple occasions this spring when we enjoyed it with friends.
Whether hiking, camping, picnicking, having a movie night, or hosting a potluck party, we found ourselves munching on various versions of furikake chex mix that our friends and we made.
It’s safe to say that this year has been filled with a lot of furikake chex mix munching!
While restocking on my favorite chips at the Japanese market, I reached for the Jagarico Hokkaido Butter Chips and had an idea. I wondered if they would taste good in furikake Chex mix.
The experimenting began and I developed a “honey butter” themed furikake Chex mix – and it turned out absolutely delicious!

Additional Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix ingredients to consider:
- honey nut cheerios
- Japanese rice crackers
- raw nuts of your choice
- honey roasted peanuts, cashews, etc. (since these are already very roasted and seasoned, we recommend mixing them in after completing the recipe)
- wasabi peas
- white cheddar Goldfish/Cheez-Its
- Korean bongbong crackers
If you want to change up the recipe by adding an extra ingredient, there are three easy ways to do it.
You can swap out 1 or 2 cups of any filling listed in the original recipe. Another option is to include the new ingredient and adjust the amount of glaze accordingly.
Alternatively, you can mix in the extra ingredient after preparing the dish, which works well for already seasoned and roasted foods.
Recipe
- Preheat oven at 250℉.
- In a saucepan, combine all the honey butter glaze ingredients. Heat on medium just until the mixture foams up and turns dark golden brown, then take off the heat. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, mix together the chex, cereal, pretzels, butter sticks, and peanuts.
- Add the glaze and stir to coat the mixture evenly.
- Add the furikake and stir again.
- Divide the mix in half and spread them evenly in two lined baking sheets. Bake at 250℉ for 1 hour to dehydrate and set the glaze.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Use a spatula to gently break up any pieces stuck together. Serve immediately, or allow to cool completely before placing them in an airtight container.
Cooking Tips for Perfect Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix
Below of some of our tips we learned through experience to make the perfect Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix:
- Use a light-colored baking sheet to avoid darkening and burning the honey butter sticks and Chex cereals. Using a dark-grey standard baking sheet led to burnt or super dark pieces that were not appetizing. We used our Our Place Baking Pan with a silicone baking mat, which prevented any burning or overcooking. If all you own is a dark baking sheet, consider adjusting the bake time and monitoring for doneness.
- Once you’ve applied the glaze, work quickly to coat and season the mixture. If it’s left out for too long at this point, the mix will get soggy. Get it in the oven to start dehydrating!
- When mixing, be careful not to crush the ingredients. Instead, focus on gently tossing them and turning the bowl as you mix to improve efficiency.
How to Store Honey Butter Furikake Chex Mix
Honey Butter Furikake Chex mix can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 week. It’s best kept in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cabinet.
We like to store our furikake chex mix in an air-locking cereal box, which helps keep it fresh for longer!
Final Thoughts
This easy-to-make snack will become the go-to party mix that your loved ones won’t stop asking for, thanks to its incredible taste of honey, butter, and furikake. Be prepared to make extra because it will disappear in no time!
