What ingredients do you need for toyomansi? Toyomansi is a flexible recipe and can be adjusted to suit your taste preferences and ingredient availability. But for the most basic sauce, you only need soy sauce and calamansi juice.
Below is a list of ingredients to make our version of Toyomansi with a spicy kick:
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- ¼ cup calamansi juice or key limes
- 5 cloves garlic minced
- 1-2 thai chili peppers to taste
- ¼ cup sweet onion minced, or any onion or shallot
Calamansi is a main ingredient that gives Toyomansi its distinct citrusy flavor. It’s a small citrus fruit that is native to the Philippines and commonly used in Filipino cuisine.
Calamansi is sometimes available at Asian markets, but if you can’t find it, you can substitute with key limes or regular limes.
You can also find calamansi juice in frozen juice packets that you can thaw and use for convenience!

You can also add a pinch of sugar to balance the sourness and saltiness.
For spicy toyomansi, it is traditional to add siling labuyo (native Filipino chili peppers.) However, in the US, you may not have access to siling labuyo, so red or green Thai chili pepper is the best alternative.
Recipe
- Chop and mince the garlic, chili, and onion.
- For fresh calamansi or key limes, squeeze the citrus over a strainer to separate the seeds and juice.
- Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
How to store Toyomansi:
Store toyomansi in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Because it contains acidic and fermented ingredients, it has a longer shelf life than other homemade sauces which would last about 2-4 days.
However, it still contains fresh ingredients so it’s best to use it within the two-week period for optimal freshness and flavor.
You can also freeze Toyomansi in an ice cube tray or freezer bag for longer storage, up to 6 months. This allows you to have toyomansi ready to use whenever you need it, without having to make a fresh batch every time!
If you use toyomansi as a marinade, DO NOT keep the leftover marinade as it may have come in contact with raw meat or seafood.
