Introduction
Ikura toast is a breakfast dish we made for those who love the salty, creamy taste of salmon roe.
Eggs are already a breakfast staple, and this dish has two different egg varieties – poached eggs and salmon roe!
We kept the ingredients list simple to showcase the flavor and texture of the eggs without distracting from too many other flavors.
The cream cheese adds a smooth, rich, and slightly tangy element that brings together the creamy poached egg with the strong taste of ikura. A sprinkling of furikake and green onion gives a savory touch to the dish.
And let’s not forget about the thick slice of toasted bread that serves as a sturdy base for these soft ingredients while offering a satisfying chewy, crispy contrast.

Ingredients
- 1 slice bread toasted
- 2 tbsp cream cheese
- 2 eggs poached
- 2 tbsp ikura
- green onion chopped
- furikake to taste
Any bread will work, but the thicker and denser, the better. A thick slice of rustic loaf bread will work better than basic sandwich bread because it is sturdy enough to hold up the soft ingredients and withstand becoming soggy too fast.
Furikake (Japanese rice seasoning) can be found at all Asian markets, and some major grocery chains. They come in many combinations of salt, fish flakes, seaweed, egg, veggies, etc., so choose one that you like or suits your diet.
Recipe
- Spread cream cheese on toasted bread. Place the poached eggs on top.
- Add ikura on top, gently placing them so they do not fall off the toast.
- Finish with a sprinkle of green onion and furikake.
Final Thoughts
Everyone loves a gorgeous breakfast toast that is also surprisingly easy to prepare! Try it on its own or as part of an elaborate brunch spread for your guests!
